OUR SHELTER

A Place to Call Home

What began as cots in the basement of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church has evolved into a comprehensive shelter system designed to meet the unique needs of individuals, families, and veterans experiencing homelessness. At RCS, we understand the critical importance of safe, stable shelter as the first step toward rebuilding lives. As a Housing First organization, we prioritize immediate access to housing, recognizing it as the foundation for stability and recovery. Our shelter includes three distinct wings: the Family Wing, Emergency Shelter, and Veteran’s Wing, each designed to provide a supportive environment for those seeking stability and a path to self-sufficiency. We provide holistic services, addressing not only housing needs but also offering comprehensive support in areas such as employment, mental health, and life skills. Each client is assigned a dedicated navigator (case manager) who works closely with them to develop individualized plans and connect them with essential resources. We are committed to preserving the dignity of every guest while empowering them to achieve long-term security and independence.

UNDERSTANDING HOMELESSNESS

Homelessness affects individuals and families across North Carolina, transcending age, background, and circumstance. The causes are varied and complex, including but not limited to economic hardship, health issues, family dynamics, systemic factors. It is important to recognize that homelessness doesn't have a single face; it manifests in various forms, from individuals sleeping in shelters or on the streets to families doubled up with relatives or residing in cars. Each story is unique, and the path to homelessness is rarely linear or predictable.

RCS's Commitment to Addressing Homelessness in Our Community

In Craven County, the need for comprehensive homelessness services is significant. On any given night, countless residents face the uncertainty of not having a place to call home. Recognizing this critical need, Religious Community Services (RCS) has evolved from its humble beginnings—providing cots in the basement of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church—to operating three distinct wings: Emergency Shelter, Family Shelter, and Veteran Shelter.

At RCS, our mission is rooted in compassion and empowerment. We are committed to preserving the dignity of every guest and resident while providing the support and resources necessary to achieve self-sufficiency and lasting security.
