how to use RSS

how to use RSS

This is a PICTURE of the symbol for RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication.

That's just a fancy way of saying that you can get "Feeds" for this website delivered right to your mailbox or favorite reader. You have seen Feeds before even if you didn't realize it. Think of the news that streams along the bottom of the television screen when there is important news or severe weather that the station wants to keep you informed of without interrupting your program. That is a "feed". A continuous stream of updates.

A "Feed Reader" is very much like a mailbox where all the things you want to read, get delivered to you as soon as they are updated. But instead of you giving out your email address or having to bookmark all the things you want to read, they are delivered to you in one very convenient place.

Feed Readers are FREE and available through most ISP's and email providers like Google, Yahoo, AOL, etc. When you click the RSS icon, it will take you to a page where you can select where you want your updates to go. If you don't already have a "Feed Reader" setup, don't worry. When you choose the type of reader (for example Google), you will be redirected to a page where you can enter your account information OR setup a new account.

If you prefer to get your updates by email, just enter your email address in the space provided (above where you see the mail icon) and click subscribe.

You can also get just the comments updates. This works the same way as the RSS button.

What are you waiting for? Give it a try! Even if you don't want to use it, you'll at least know what it is when you see that symbol everywhere online.

Soup Kitchen

The Soup Kitchen is one of the better known  programs at RCS. Literally hundreds of  volunteers work together  to keep the Soup Kitchen  running efficiently. The Soup Kitchen volunteers come from all over Craven County, Jones County and Pamlico County.

The Soup Kitchen serves a hot nutritious meal 7 days a week, 364 days each year.
Monday – Friday from 10:30 until 11:45
Saturday and Sunday from 3:30 – 4:45

Our website shows the number of meals
served each day in the Soup Kitchen.

Each shift is managed by a Day-Captain (who is also a volunteer). When the Day-Captain arrives at the start of their shift, they will do a very quick inventory of the food items that are available that particular day and then figure out how to best use those items to create a hot meal. By the way… they turn out some pretty GREAT meals in this soup kitchen!!

Soup KitchenThe Soup Kitchen has wide variety of volunteers. Their ages range from 8 to 80. We have several families that volunteer together as a family, we have individuals, groups and couples. Wherever they come from and whatever their reason for volunteering, they all say the same thing… Working in the Soup Kitchen is hard work, but it’s good work!

Each year on Thanksgiving, the marines come in and operate the Soup Kitchen. It’s an annual tradition now.

soup-kitchen-dining-roomThe Soup Kitchen is open to anyone that wants to come in and have a hot meal and the number of guests varies each day. If you are hungry, come in and be fed. That’s it. No restrictions, no requirements, no ID necessary. Simply some in and be fed.  There is no limit to the number of times that a person can come in and eat. If someone shows up every day, they will be fed every day.

NO FOOD IS OFFERED TO-GO! The Soup Kitchen serves cafeteria style, on trays only.

Almost ALL of the food used in the Soup Kitchen is donated, most of it from local grocery stores and restaurants. The food recovery program is part of this effort.
