RCS participates in many annual events that help raise awareness about our mission. We are fortunate to be in a community that wants to help others in their time of need. Organizing, promoting and staffing these events takes a lot of manpower. We encourage you to get involved any way you can. Volunteer, walk, run, attend, promote, participate; whatever you can do to help spread the word.

DECEMBER

Sledding, Shopping and Food Drive Sunday: This is an annual Beary Merry Christmas event sponsored by the Downtown Council New Bern Chamber of Commerce. Each year, SNOW comes to New Bern with a fun afternoon of sledding, bouncing, arts and crafts for the kids. Guests are encouraged to bring food donations for RCS and/or make a monetary contribution to help others during the Christmas season. All proceeds from the sale of hot chocolate and cookies come back to RCS. This event requires a lot of volunteers, so please consider giving time during this very fun afternoon! More information online at www.bearymerrychristmas.com.

FEBRUARY

Empty Bowls is a joint outreach of RCS and the Craven Arts Council & Gallery. Empty Bowls is a project designed to fight hunger and help support the Arts Council. What makes this event so wonderful is that it is personalized by artists and organizations on a community level. Local restaurants and churches make, serve and donate soup and bread for the event; and individuals and local artists donate pottery, baskets and paintings. Attendees get to have some soup and bread and choose a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Bring your friends ~ who doesn’t love hot soup on a cold winter’s day? More information and tickets at Craven Arts Council.

MARCH

Neuse River Bridge Run: The Neuse River Bridge Run has grown significantly over the years to be one of the premiere races in our state. Thousands of runners and walkers participate in this run that offers a 5K, 10K and half marathon. A portion of the proceeds raised at this event benefits RCS, with portions donated to other non-profit organization. We are pleased to be a part of this wonderful event and encourage you to register to run and/or volunteer during the day of the event.

MAY

Mail Carrier Food Drive: sponsored by the USPS, this national event will take place on May 14th, 2016. Residents in Craven County are encouraged to leave canned goods by the mailbox in bags. Your mail carrier (or RCS volunteer drivers) will pickup these canned goods to bring to the Food Pantry at RCS. Last year New Bern residents donated over 32,000 pounds of food! Volunteers are needed on collection day and the days to follow to help sort food and prepare for storage. This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals and small groups.

JUNE

Tryon Civitan Food Drive: Every June, the Tryon Civitan Group sponsors a special food drive to encourage donations for RCS. Past donations have included sugar, peanut butter, rice, cereal, and diapers. Stay tuned for what the 2016 collection will be. Donation drop is at the UPS Store on Glenburnie Road in New Bern; please consider making a donation to this effort!

JULY

Christmas in July: sponsored by Thea’s Ideas, this event takes place every year in July. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods or monetary donations to RCS as their cost of admission to see the latest in business promotional items. This is a wonderful event for businesses and non-profits to attend. More information can be found at Thea’s Ideas.

SEPTEMBER

CROP Walk: To be held each fall, this is an annual event organized by local volunteers to raise funds to end hunger. Start point is at Union Point Park and there are 5K and 10K options. A great event for the family, we encourage you to sign up to walk and get sponsors to donate money per mile or completion. More information can be found here.
